Chartered London Teacher Status

Chartered London Teacher (CLT) status recognises and rewards the skills and expertise of London teachers. CLT status is for teachers who, on a day-to-day basis, play a key role in transforming education in London by working to raise the achievements of all pupils and by challenging educational under-achievement and disadvantage.

CLT status:

  • Celebrates the quality of professional practice and commitment to continuing development by London teachers;
  • Recognises the distinctive challenges and opportunities of teaching in London;
  • Should be part of a London teacher’s day-to-day work and integrated with performance management arrangements – it is not a stand alone additional process;
  • Carries with it the award of a £1,000 lump sum on achievement of CLT status;
  • Offers scope to combine with further professional development activities and accreditation;
  • Builds on best professional practice, including observation of others and teachers sharing experience;
  • Promotes London teachers and their teaching as leading the way in professional practice and career development.

For London to be a world leader in education, London teachers must be recognised as among the best in their profession. CLT status is designed to provide this recognition.

CLT status is part of the Government’s City Challenge strategy to secure transformation in educational standards and establish London as the world’s leading creative and learning city. London schools, our teachers and pupils are key to the future of London.

The scale of London is unique within Britain and Europe. It is a city of contrasts with extremes of wealth and deprivation – often in close geographical proximity. London has both higher than national average unemployment levels and, for those in work, higher overall earnings. London is also a dynamic and changing city with higher than national levels of pupil and staff mobility. The London community is diverse with 40% of pupils having English as an additional language and over 300 languages spoken in the city.

In London, very many schools are performing extremely well and achieve significant value added scores. But there are also significant challenges: there is a range of performance between schools and for groups of pupils. Enabling every young person to achieve, no matter what their background, remains the crucial challenge. This will include addressing the higher than average levels of exclusions and unauthorised absence across London overall and concerns about behaviour within schools.

Alongside challenges, however, our schools, students and teachers benefit also from the rich opportunities presented by living and learning in London. There is a range of unparalleled resources within the Capital, including those involving sports, culture, music, arts, museums, business, education and government. London is the largest city, and most culturally and ethnically diverse, in Britain and Europe providing considerable opportunities for learning with, and from, the range of communities. The school workforce in London is also large and diverse, involving around 60,000 teachers, with opportunities for working and learning together for the benefit of London being supported by the CLT and City Challenge.

As a London teacher, you are crucial to building on London’s opportunities and overcoming challenges in order to achieve the London Challenge of creating a world-leading city for learning for the benefit of all young people.

The College of Teachers in partnership with the London Centre for Leadership and Learning (LCLL, Institute of Education, University of London) are pleased to be working with the Department for Children, Schools and Families where we are administering and managing the Chartered London Teacher Status initiative.
