Naz Bokhari was the first Muslim to become headmaster of a secondary school in the UK. Between 1985 and 2002 his very effective leadership of Ernest Bevin College in Tooting in London resulted in the school becoming one of the most improved in the country.
In 2001 Naz received an OBE for services to education in recognition of his work as the principal of Ernest Bevin College.
After his retirement he continued as a governor of several colleges as well as primary, secondary special and faith schools. Naz chaired the Education Committee of the Muslim Council of Britain for four years and was also a founder member and former President of the Muslim Teachers’ Association. He did a great deal in driving forward Muslim education and working towards equality of access for all. He was a Council Member of the General Teaching Council for England (GTCE) from 2005 to 2009 and sat on the panel of national judges for the Teaching Awards.
Naz sat on the Council of The College of Teachers for many years and made an invaluable contribution to the direction of The College.
Naz passed away on 1 March 2011 and he will be sadly missed by all who had the great privilege of working with him.
