School disaffection and musical response

This article is based on a three-year study aimed to document the links between music and disaffection. 21 students who entered Year 7 in a mainstream secondary school, from five feeder primary schools within one local education authority, were identified as being disaffected. They were interviewed twice a year for three years. Their parents were interviewed once a year. An assessment of emotional and physical response to certain types of music was gained by observation and by recording the physical effects of listening to music.
